When you finish a beautifully brewed cup of traditional coffee, you are usually left with a clean mug. But in our world, the magic is just getting started when you reach the bottom of the cup.

The word Telve (pronounced tel-veh) is the traditional term for the rich, velvety coffee grounds that settle at the bottom of a cup of Turkish or Middle Eastern coffee. Instead of being filtered out and thrown away, the telve is an essential part of the brewing process, giving the coffee its signature body, intense flavor, and unmistakable aroma.

A Ritual of Connection

For centuries, the telve has been at the center of community and connection. In many cultures, after the coffee is shared, the cup is flipped upside down onto its saucer. Once the grounds cool, the intricate patterns left behind by the telve are used to tell fortunes (fal).

It’s a beautiful tradition, but to us, it symbolizes something even deeper:

  • Slowing Down: You cannot rush a coffee that leaves telve. It demands that you sit, sip slowly, and savor the moment.
  • Intention: Every grain of coffee serves a purpose from the first boil to the final drop.
  • Conversation: The reading of the grounds is ultimately an excuse to stay at the table longer with the people you love.

Bringing the Philosophy to Your Cup

At Telve Coffee, we built our brand on this exact philosophy. Whether you are enjoying a finely ground, traditional ibrik brew or a modern espresso, we want your coffee experience to leave an impression. We believe coffee shouldn’t just be fuel for a busy day — it should be a ritual that grounds you.

Next time you visit us or brew a bag of our beans at home, take a moment when you reach the bottom of your cup. Look at the impression it left, and appreciate the pause in your day.
